A home bakery that grew into a cake studio, a weekend bread club and festive hampers, all from one kitchen
The work
It started with birthday cakes for the neighbours. Then came a Saturday bread round, and every December a run of hampers. The baking stayed the same. Keeping track of who ordered what, for which day, got harder every season.
Where it gets hard
- Orders arrive by message, by phone and at the door, and some get missed
- Flour and butter run out in the middle of a busy week
- Receipts for three lines of work end up in one shoebox
What running it in one place changes
- Every order for every line lands in one list, with the day it is due
- Stock goes down as orders are made, so the shopping list writes itself
- The month closes with the money for each line kept apart
