Meet the people behind Bhandari Brass Works
Suresh BhandariManaging partner, second generation
Ritika BhandariHis daughter, joined after her engineering degree
Gopal SinghFloor supervisor for twenty-two years
Suresh’s father started Bhandari Brass Works with two lathes and a furnace. Today the workshop has around forty people, a casting shed, a polishing line and a loading bay that is never quiet.
The customers are distributors in a dozen towns who sell taps, handles and fittings on to hardware shops. Most have ordered from the Bhandaris for years, often by phone.
Ritika came back after her degree meaning to stay a year. She is still there, and she has opinions about spreadsheets.
What was going wrong
Stock lived in a spreadsheet that three people edited and nobody trusted. Raw brass was bought when Gopal said the bin looked low. Distributor orders were written on a pad by the phone, then typed up at night.
Machines were serviced when they broke. Payroll was worked out by an outside accountant from attendance registers. When a big distributor asked what they owed, working it out took two days.
“My father ran this place from memory. I love that about him, and it is also why I don’t want to be the next memory.”
The workarounds that got them this far
- The stock spreadsheet
Three versions on three computers, and the loading bay trusted none of them.
- An off-the-shelf accounting package
Good for tax, but stock, purchasing and payroll lived elsewhere.
- A new clerk to type up orders
Helped, but moved the problem rather than removing it.
Bhandari Brass Works on Intersink
Ritika creates her User ID, adds the firm as a business and gives her father and Gopal roles of their own. The factory channel comes first, with stock. Purchasing, the trade desk and the office channel follow over the next few months. The Wholesale app, currently in beta, is one they may add later for distributor price lists.
The apps in this story
Multi-warehouse inventory with batches, reorder points and stock transfers.
Vendors, purchase requests, orders and approvals that feed bills into Accounting.
Laptops, phones and equipment with owners, handovers and depreciation.
Leads, contacts, tasks, calendar, tickets and ads in one place.
Contract templates, e-signature and a register with renewal reminders.
Book couriers, print labels and track parcels and returns across major UK and US carriers.
Invoice your clients, track what they owe, record expenses and see profit.
People, attendance, leave, payroll and payslips for the company that owns this channel.
UK VAT and US sales tax with reconciliation, due dates and notices.
A day in their life, some months in
Gopal checks the stock screen on the floor tablet. Brass rod has dropped below its reorder point, so he raises a purchase request from the alert.
Suresh approves the purchase order from his phone. The supplier gets it as a PDF.
A distributor calls with an order. Ritika logs it against their record in the CRM while they are on the line.
Goods arrive at the bay. The receipt note is matched against the order and the supplier’s bill.
The polishing machine is due for its service next week. The reminder came from the asset register.
A distributor asks what is outstanding. Ritika checks the ageing report in Accounting and replies before leaving.
What is different now
In plain words, because this is an illustrative story and there are no real measurements behind it.
One stock figure everyone trusts
Batches, bins and reorder points in one place, counted with barcodes.
Buying follows need, not a hunch
Reorder alerts prompt purchase requests, which go through approval.
Machines are looked after
Service reminders arrive from the asset register before a breakdown.
The office runs in daylight
Orders go in once, invoices and VAT returns come from the same records.

What others could take from this
- Fix the number everyone argues about first
For the Bhandaris that was stock. Everything else leaned on it.
- Bring the veterans in early
Gopal helped set the reorder points. He knew them better than any spreadsheet.
- Move one spreadsheet at a time
Each one retired only when its replacement had run for a month.
Making things, and tired of the stock spreadsheet?
Inventory, purchasing, assets and accounts, one channel at a time.
